With more than 300 attendees, the second Open House for the green hydrogen project Energía Verde Austral (EVA) by EDF, the french state-owned company EDF and global leader in clean energy generation, came to a close. The event, part of the Early Public Participation (EPP) process, took place on April 11 and 12 at the Central Module (room 315) of the Punta Arenas Free Trade Zone, with the aim of sharing the project's progress and next steps, as well as gathering questions and concerns from the community.
The EVA project, which is expected to enter the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA) by the end of the year, involves the construction of a wind farm of up to 1 GW and an electrolysis plant that will produce up to 400,000 tons of green ammonia per year, using wind energy and desalinated water.
Juan Camus, EDF Project Director, emphasized that " EDF Group's goal is to support Chile´s energy transition and fight against climate change. We have been in Chile since 2014 and arrived in Magallanes a couple of years ago to develop a green hydrogen project that we hope will become a driver of sustainable development for the region and the country. This hydrogen project seeks to transform the wind of Magallanes into a clean fuel useful for the decarbonization of the energy matrix."
More than 300 people participated in the successful event, including the mayor of Primavera, Karina Fernández; the Regional Secretaries for the Environment and Labor of Magallanes, Enrique Rebolledo and Doris Sandoval, respectively; the Executive Director of H2V Magallanes, Salvador Harambour; representatives of the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA); academics and students from the University of Magallanes and local schools. Also participating were representatives of the members of CORFO's Transforma Program, the delegation of the Chilean student project “Hidrogenios,” consultants from the energy sector, leaders of the Hernando de Magallanes Community Union of Neighborhood Councils, and members of H2V Magallanes, among others.
